Located near Hexham, Heritage Sash Solutions can help you restore the timeless charm of your property with its full suite of sash window repair, sash window renovation, sash window restoration & thermal upgrade services.
Complimenting regular repairs, refurbishments and draught-proofing upgrades to get your windows working with fingertip ease, free of draughts & rattles, we specialise in returning a box sash to its original elegance & splendour by giving your window all the care it needs.
During refurbishment works we’re able to strip, sand & repaint the sashes and have carefully developed techniques to replace any mouth-blown cylinder glass which may have cracked or been lost over time, whilst delicately preserving what remains. This reinstates the original cylinder (‘wavy’) look to the entire window which has proven highly popular with listed properties owners & conservation officers alike. The impact of such investment is simply stunning.
Whether you’ve antique glass or not, having your sash windows repaired and draught-proofed (rather than replaced) is almost always the right thing to do and painting the sashes & their box whilst they’re out for repairs or upgrades also makes great sense. Since every need is taken care of you’ll not need a painter to follow in behind and your sash windows will serve you & your family well for a very long time to come. It’s a single service ‘one-stop-shop’ approach.
As a Listed Property Owners Club (LPOC) supplier we’re dedicated to preserving architectural legacies using the right materials, techniques & craftsmanship whilst lowering heat loss & raising thermal efficiency.

“Giles brought all of his knowledge and experience to restoring and upgrading our Victorian sashes. He was more than up for the challenge of replacing the existing plain single pane glass with high performing vacuum glazing to raise the acoustic and thermal performance, without sacrificing their historical charm. Along with the additional draft-proofing, new hardware and re-cording, they work better than new! He is a true craftsman who takes great care in his work “

“What started as the restoration of two dormer sashes quickly widened to a full blown restoration of two large dormers on the fourth floor of our beautiful 1864 Victorian terrace. Having scaffolded to re-roof it was soon apparent that the dormer structures were seriously compromised by lack of maintenance and botched historical repairs. Many of the lower front and side bars supporting the (ill-fitting) glazing and some load bearers were crumbling. Our front dormer is a highly ornate domed construction with an upper central ball finial and includes much curved antique glasswork. The restoration was a complex repair job which required planning, shuttering to support the structure and enable like-for-like restorations and in summary a very sensitive approach to retain the good and replace the bad. Giles handed this with aplomb; drawing up and re-instating our ornate finial (true to shape and size) in cedar; cutting new curved mouth blown glass to fit the arches; accoya custom sills and sub-sills, architraves, side cladding; he even restored the perished lead-work, upgrading its ornate boxwork and cladding to improve our high level drainage. Throughout the job he was upfront about the work required, gave daily updates on WhatsApp with photos and was kind with his time explaining the design and function of different aspect of the dormers. I thoroughly recommend Giles should you desire a traditional, tasteful and sympathetic repair.”

“Our antique sash windows have been given a new lease of life by Giles, who has also managed to retain all their original glass, charm and character. We feel a lot of pressure living in an old listed building to “get it right” and have no hesitation at all in asking Giles to take charge of repairing and refurbishing the windows, knowing how carefully and sympathetically he treats them. We look forward to seeing much more of Giles over the next few years as we gradually work our way round each of the rooms! “

“Giles has done an excellent job breathing life back into two large feature sash windows. They have been beautifully restored and work perfectly. Giles clearly really cares about what he does and it shows in the results of his work. I would recommend him to anyone who loves heritage windows. “

“Giles work is meticulous in the extreme. We have a number of sash windows in the Victorian extension of our grade 2, several of which in a sorry state. Giles repaired them seamlessly. They now run beautifully and, what’s even better, they don’t let drafts in. With one of the windows he also reinstated the original glass. Giles explains everything which is both interesting and reassuring . We have no hesitation in highly recommending him.”
Liz McQuillen, Hotspur House, Allendale, June 2025
“Giles has sympathetically restored two of our antique sash windows superbly. The knowledge he has of his craft is exceptional, as is his attention to detail. We have no hesitations in recommending him to others and we will undoubtedly be returning to him with more work in the future. “
Warren Maxwell, Ryton Village, May 2025
“Our bedroom sash windows had been glued, nailed and painted shut for 20+ years. Giles managed to find and install a large beautiful replacement piece of cylinder glass and got all the windows moving again, painted, balanced and draught-proofed. Our windows are now the envy of the street and we’ll be getting him back to do the downstairs ones soon. He took enormous care on the job and was excellent value, would highly recommend.”
Hunter Charlton, Sydney Grove, Newcastle, March 2025
“Excellent advice, superb workmanship and outstanding results, we could not be happier. Thank you!”
Allan Morrison, Belmont, January 2025
“The large ‘feature’ sash overlooking the garden from our kitchen was painted shut, its sill had rotted and much of the original historic glass had sadly been lost, replaced by modern panes. Giles lovingly restored our window. Skilfully managing to save 6 original panes and sourcing 10 others of matching ‘cylinder’ glass to reinstate it throughout. You can’t even tell now and we couldn’t be happier, it’s brought new life to our living space and aligns to the careful restoration of our listed property.”
Susie Pool, Hexham, May 2024
“Entrusting the heritage sash windows in our Grade II home to Giles was one of the best decisions we’ve made. His meticulous restoration work breathed new life into our cherished windows, preserving their historical charm while enhancing their functionality. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the amazing results he delivered.”
Professor Conroy Dalton, Hexham, March 2024
“We are delighted with the restoration of our dormer sash window which was in a sorry state when Giles arrived. His care, attention to detail and craftsmanship brought it back from the brink. We now have a lovely original sash window in beautiful condition, we’re so happy with the result.”
Lesley Marshall, Graham Park Rd, Gosforth, December 2023
“We benefitted greatly from Giles’ advice and work when we decided to invest in secondary glazing (Extraglaze) in our Grade 2 listed Victorian semi. His preparations on the windows, laser work and measuring were meticulous and his work was thorough throughout the process. We have had great benefit in terms of warmth and sound reduction”.
Chris Davey, Galgate, Barnard Castle, November 2023
“We’re based in a listed building and needed a very large heritage window restoring which had been painted shut, was very difficult to access and had lost its vintage hardware. Giles reinstated our window reviving its original features. He was professional, friendly, efficient and completely transparent about all the work needed. It’s the only time we have had work done to a fantastic standard, and for a very fair price. 100% recommend.”
Louise Snape, Director, Hand Of Children’s Charity, Newcastle Quayside, August 2023
